Canonbie
United Parish Church achieved Fairtrade Church Status in November 2008
but the
Canonbie Church’s Fairtrade story began in September 2001 when a £100
donation
from the Guild Account opened a Fairtrade Account.
A
Traidcraft stall was opened and has operated every Sunday since and at
many
coffee mornings, soup kitchens and craft fairs in Canonbie, Langholm
and
Glenzier. We have also been able to run Fairtrade quizzes and raffles
at these
events thanks to generous donations of Fairtrade goods from Lothian and
Borders
Co-op. The stall sells various products from tea to trinket boxes, from
coffee
to cards. New suggestions for items to stock are always welcome and our
latest
product is chocolate spread - after a request from a congregation
member. The
verdict on it is that, “It is even better than the leading brand!”
The
church also now uses Fairtrade tea and coffee at all its services,
meetings and
events and Fairtrade is promoted in worship and prayer.
Church
members have also promoted Fairtrade at Langholm Co-op in Fairtrade
Fortnight
and at the National Gathering in 2008 when we were lucky enough to have
£60
worth of Fairtrade chocolate (once again donated by Co-op) to give
away. This
give-away was accompanied by the slogan, “Fight For Fairtrade, Eat
Chocolate!”
Lots of people were happy to help.
Other
events have included talks and games with Guides and Brownies, coffee
evenings
and in 2005 a Fairtrade Tree at the Christmas Tree Festival.
The latest venture was a very enjoyable Fairtrade Coffee Evening and Fashion show held at Gilnockie Hall in October 2008. Clothes and crafts were lent by Carlisle World Shop and nine models showed off about 25 outfits in all. The £150 made on the door and raffle has been donated to Traidcraft Exchange, the charity arm of Traidcraft.
Matthew Chapter
25,
verses 35 - 40
Jesus said
"For I
was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave
me
something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed
clothes
and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison
and you
came to visit me."
Then the
Righteous
answered him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and
you give you something to drink? When
did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and
clothe
you? When did we
see you sick or in
prison and visit you?”
Jesus
replied, “I tell
you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers
of mine,
you did for me.”
When we
buy
FAIRTRADE goods we do a little for our brothers and sisters in need and
we make
a consumer vote for
Making Poverty History.
Hand Crafted Fairtrade Storage and Display Cabinet
Our Fairtrade Group applied for a grant to fund:
* a bespoke piece of furniture to securely store and display our Traidcraft stock.
* display materials including a desktop display stand.
* promtional materials to take to events outside the church.
We are delighted to say the grant from the Scottish Fair Trade Forum for £372.65 has been sucessful. Rainer Lohmann from Glenzier has now made the storage and display cabinet out of pew doors and pew wood so that it is in the same style as the servery and the cabinet is on wheels so it can be moved if needed.
